A MUSICAL MANDALA
Inspired by the Rubin Museum of Art’s ongoing exhibition of Mandalas in New York City, "A Musical Mandala," explores the various manifestations of the mandala – an artistic aid for meditation and one of Himalayan Buddhism’s most ubiquitous symbols. The concert takes the music of J. S. Bach as its starting point and circles through works by Schumann, Ysaÿe, Bartók, Brahms, Kurtag, Crumb, Barkauskas, Pärt, and Stravinsky, creating a musical mandala. With pianist, Donald Berman.

"The Stuff Dreams Are Made On" and takes its theme from the Rubin Museum of Art’s exhibition of Carl Jung’s famous “Red Book,” in which he details his theory of the collective unconscious. The concert will entrance with music of fantasy, hallucination and reverie and will include music by Georges Enesco, Jean Sibelius, George Crumb, John Cage and Franz Schubert, and texts by Sylvia Plath. Using music, prose and poetry, the program will invite the audience on a nocturnal journey from dusk through dawn, creating a narrative of memory, nightmare and fantasy. With Obie Award-winning actress Elizabeth Marvel, and pianist Donald Berman.

How do we interpret our place in the universe, and how is our interpretation informed by religion and culture? "A Pilgrim’s Progress" will explore these questions through the music of Heinrich Ignaz Biber (Mystery Sonatas), Francis Poulenc (Sonata for Violin and Piano) and Bruce Saylor (Dante Suite). Mr. Morgenstern will be joined by Obie Award-winning actor Bill Camp who will read prose and poetry by Carl Sagan, Federico García Lorca and Dante Alighieri, and pianist Donald Berman.
